It's Friday, so our heads are full of a few of our favourite things - the things we love to discover when visiting schools. (As well as thoughts of sun, holidays and speeding off on a Vespa).

  • We're expected
  • A dog under the Head’s desk
  • Honesty
  • Pupils carefree enough to be themselves and tell us how it really is
  • Ambitious art – Jackson Pollock on acrylic; 8ft papier maché giraffes; ball dresses we would wear
  • Waving tinies when we enter primary classrooms
  • Heads who are taking their pupils’ mental health as seriously as their academic success
  • Bedrooms for day pupils in a boarding school
  • A whole art room full of potters wheels
  • Individual learning objectives on stickers for each child for every lesson
  • A DT workshop so chock full with equipment you’d believe you could make a family car
  • Up-to- date noticeboards and dazzling displays
  • Instruments in the music rooms – especially unusual ones we don’t know the names of
  • Creatures in the biology lab and pets in the classroom
  • Children holding doors open for each other
  • Bean bags for lounging in the library
  • Staff smiling and greeting each other and pupils as they go around the school
  • Girls' cricket teams and boys knitting
  • Wriggle time
  • Double air-lock doors, visitor passes/stickers and sign-ins i.e. serious safe-guarding

On Monday, we'll be feeling a little grumpier and revealing our pet hates! Wishing you a happy weekend and bon voyage for those already embarking on summer holidays.
